Statistics Activity: Exploring confidence levels in a confidence interval with M&M™ candy
In this activity, students will create 10 confidence intervals to try and capture the known about of yellow M&Ms in their population. They will understand the difference between a confidence interval and a confidence level.
This activity can be used with your AP Statistics or regular level statistics class. These are the following skills covered:
Math Common Core Standards, High School: Probability and Statistics
- Use data from a sample survey to estimate a population mean or proportion; develop a margin of error through the use of simulation models for random sampling. (IC.B.4)
AP Statistics Course Exam Description
- UNC-4.B Verify the conditions for calculating confidence intervals for a population proportion
- UNC-4.D Calculate an appropriate confidence interval for a population proportion.
- UNC-4.F Interpret a confidence interval for a population proportion.
